Other Basic Responsibilities Of A Base Coach

Apart from the responsibilities that a base coach has when he first enters the ballpark, there are many other basic responsibilities also.

Following is a list of some duties of a base coach:

• A base coach should help the runners focus well on their task. The runner should be made to concentrate on the task of base running when he arrives at the base. In other words, his attention should be drifted away from the previous at-bat or running play.

• In order to help the runner concentrate, it is the base coach’s duty to bring the pertinent points to the forefront of the runner's mind. Details of the inning, score, number of outs, who else is on base, etc., should be revised in his presence to make him alert.

• Reminding him of the runner’s possible responses to the very next play is also the responsibility of the base coach. For instance, the base coach should remind the runners to perform one or more of the following:

o “Advance on a ground ball”
o “Get a good secondary lead”
o “Pick up the 3rd base coach on a base hit”
o “Freeze on a line drive”
o “Make sure the bunt hits the ground before you run”
o “Be alert for passed balls”
o "Check the position of the outfielders"
o “Go half way on a fly”

• The base coach should help the runners advance around the bases and ultimately score while the ball is in play.

• Also, the base coach keeps the base runners alert about the unexpected, such as errors and overthrows.

• Finally, the base coach is also supposed to resolve any communication problems with the players, explain them the logic of the coaching decisions made while they were on base, and praise the players for their successes.
